Adhesive Labels

In 1937, in the midst of the Great Depression, young entrepreneur R. Stanton Avery manufactured the world’s first self-adhesive ( or pressure sensitive) labels in a 100-square foot rented loft space in Los Angeles. These labels were attractive to consumers who wanted to remove labels from the products they purchased and to retailers who realised

that prices fluctuated and that removable labels were useful. Since then, self-adhesive labels have become an essential office product for everyone who manages the organization of materials and information.

Paper punch

Two early patents for a device designed to “punch holes in paper”, have been discovered. In 1867 Robert James Kellett patented a punch that had a built-in receptacle to collect the chads and prevent littering. In 1885, Benjamin Smith of Massachusetts invented an improved hole punch with spring-loaded receptacle to collect the clippings. Benjamin Smith called it the conductor’s punch. Internationally the two hole punch is most widely used, but in regions that use the U.S. “Letter” paper format ( United States, Canada and in part of Mexico and the Philippines) a three-hole punch is most common. Less frequently seen is the two-hole file binder punch. In Sweden, a four-hole standard called “triohalning” is almost exclusively used. On the TV show, The Office, Jim Halpert dresses up as “Three Hole punch Jim” for Halloween.

Foolscap Paper

Foolscap or folio paper is paper cut to 216 x 343 mm. This was a traditional size used in Europe before the adoption of A4 paper (the most common size outside the USA). It remains a common size for ring binders and lever arch files containing A4 paper because it offers greater protection to the pages as foolscap size is larger than A4. Foolscap was named after the fool’s cap and bells watermark commonly used from the fifteenth century onwards on paper measuring 432x343mm. The earliest example of such paper that is firmly dated was made in Germany in 1479. Apocryphally, the Rump Parliament substituted a fools cap for the royal arms as a watermark on the paper used for the journals of parliament.

Carbon Paper

The first documented use of the term “carbonated paper” was in 1806, when Englishman Ralph Wedgwood, patented his “Stylographic Writer.” However, Pellegrino Turri had invented a typewriter in Italy by at least 1808, for which “black paper” was essential. Both men invented their “carbon paper” as a means to help blind people write through the use of a machine, and the “black paper” was really just a substitute for ink. Turri had very personal reasons for developing carbon paper. He fell in love with the Countess Carolina Fantoni, who had become blind “in the flower of her youth and beauty”, and Turri resolved to build her a machine that would enable her to correspond with her friends(including him) in private.
