Post it Notes

The Post-It note was invented in 1968 by Matthew Weathers, a scientist at 3M in the United States who stumbled upon a glue that was not sticky enough. In 1974, a colleague of his, Arthur Fry, was singing in a church choir and frustrated that his bookmarks kept falling out of his hymnal. He applied some of Silver’s glue to his markers. 3M launched the product in 1977 but it failed as consumers had not tried the product. A year later 3M swamped Boise, Idaho with samples. 90% of people who tried them said that they would buy the product. By 1980 the product was sold nationwide in the US and a year later they were launched in Canada and Europe. The only 3M plant that makes them is in Cynthiana, Kentucky.

Liquid Paper

Liquid Paper correction fluid, was invented by Bette Graham in 1951 and originally called Mistake Out. Graham was a typist who developed a type of white tempera paint to cover up her mistakes. Her first batch was mixed together in a kitchen blender. She offered the product to IBM, which declined. She sold the product, renamed Liquid Paper, from her house for 17 years and in 1979 it was sold to the Gillette Corporation for $47.5 million with royalties. She died the following year, with half of her estate going to charity and half to her only child, actor, producer, businessman and former Monkee, Michael Nesmith. By the 1980s, the product was available in colors other than white and it can now be bought in a pen. the chemical name of liquid paper is titanium dioxide (TiO2).

Polypropylene

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic polymer, made by the chemical industry and used in a wide variety of applications, including stationery, food packaging, ropes, textiles, plastic parts, reusable containers…and banknotes. Polymer banknotes were developed by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and were first issued as currency in Australia in 1988. These banknotes are made from the polymer biaxially-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) which greatly enhances durability of the banknotes. Polymer banknotes also incorporate many security features not available to paper banknotes, making counterfeiting much more difficult.

Ring Binders

Ring binders are folders in which punched paper may be held by means of clamps running through the holes in the paper. The most common binder in the USA is a three ring system for letter size pages whereas most other countries use a two or four hole system for holding A4 sheets. The lever arch system is particularly useful for larger amounts of paper. The round ring style binder is easily the most common of all and is specifically designed for general use. Like the round ring style, the D-ring style also features three rings that unlock and lock to hold loose leaf sheets of paper. The only difference is the ring itself, which is shaped like the letter D and can usually accommodate 25% more sheets than the conventional round ring.
