Klawer was named after the wild clover that grows in the area.
The town has more than clovers on display during later winter and spring, however, when the yearly bloom of technicolour wildflowers happens on the West Coast.

The town falls within the southern section of the famous Cape Wild Flower Route, which attracts visitors annually, and is one of many little towns in the area renowned for its extravagant show of flora.

The Klawer Wine Cellar was founded in 1957 and, after selling its high-quality wine to larger companies, decided to cut out the middle man and started bottling and selling the prized wine under their own name. Today, the enterprise is a fully-fledged wine cellar, with tasting tours and a yearly Klawer Wine Cellar event.

Despite its small size, Klawer boasts a lively business centre that provides goods and services to its residents as well as surrounding communities.
