One of the oldest fishing villages in South Africa, Paternoster is known for its white-bleached fishing cottages home to the generations of fishing families that fished its waters.

Multi-coloured paddle-powered fishing boats lie scattered across the town’s white beaches waiting to be taken to sea for the next catch.

And although tourism has overtaken fishing as the town’s major industry, the boats still launch daily in search of fish.

A result of the once-thriving fishing industry in Paternoster is one of the best-known brands in South Africa, called Redro. A red fish paste, Redro has been spread on the toast and crackers of South Africans young and old for many years.

The first Redro factory was built in Paternoster in the 1930s by the Stephan family in an attempt to compete with Peck’s Anchovette, a fish paste brand from Great Britain.

Today, Paternoster is one of the culinary hotspots on the West Coast, with many well-known chefs and foodies making use of the setting to complement their dishes, many of which are made from traditional recipes.

Fresh fish is readily available from the local fishermen as is West Coast crayfish, a local delicacy.

The tranquil surrounds of Paternoster have also attracted artists from the city inspired by the town’s beauty.

The white fishing cottages and boats feature on paintings and photographs across the world as the quintessential emblems of life on the West Coast.
