The Saint-Tropez of the West Coast for many reasons, Port Owen is the first deep-sea residential marina developed in South Africa. And it took a monumental effort. The port’s founder H. Owen Wiggins Junior, with the help of contractors, dredged approximately one million cubic metres of sand and rock over 15 years to the canals and jetties that make Port Owen one of the main attractions on the Western Cape coast.

Pioneered by the 38 foot yacht called Absolutely!, the Port Owen Yacht Club has grown to become one of the best on the coast. Guesthouses, palm trees and marina living add to the reputation of Port Owen as a veritable oasis in an otherwise semi-arid landscape.

With limited potential for expansion – the Berg River surrounds it on three sides – the intimate nature of the port will remain unchanged, as would its appeal to yachtsmen and holidaymakers.

Every year, the iconic Berg River canoe marathon ends near Port Owen bringing with it an influx of people to the region. Starting in Paarl some 248 kilometres up river, the marathon traverses cold and often turbulent waters and forms part of the big three canoe marathons in the country.

Port Owen has been growing slowly but surely and business is thriving.
